"Rural Development and Social Change in Brazil: Challenges and Perspectives"
a presentation by Prof Sergio Schneider (University of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brazil) on 4th of May 2016 at 5.30pm at BOKU University.
In his presentation Prof Sergio Schneider will address how, in recent years, Brazil has successfully addressed one of its most important historical legacies: rural poverty and food insecurity. By adopting a set of policies and initiatives, it was possible to reduce social inequalities and increase food security. The presentation will focus on the role of family farming and food policies for the small scale rural sector, mainly the food purchase program and the public food procurement policies. Also, the challenges of maintaining the policies in a scenario of economic and political crisis and fiscal austerity are discussed.
Sergio Schneider is Professor of Sociology of Rural Development and Food Studies at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brazil. Currently he is Academic Visitor at the Centre for Food Policy (CFP), City University, London. He is deputy president of the Latin American Rural Sociology Association.
