About us

The Austrian Society for Agricultural Economics ( ÖGA ) is an academic society founded in Vienna in December 1990.

Goals & Tasks

The ÖGA sees itself as an institutionalized forum for the social, political, and economic scientific discussion of issues relating to the agricultural sector. It aims to improve communication among academics, foster the exchange of experiences, opinions, and ideas, and encourage the intensification of contacts within its professional community.

Accordingly, this academic society is conceived as a legal entity intended to facilitate the presentation of new research results and the discussion of methodological issues.

To this end, the ÖGA stimulates public interest in agricultural economic research, organizes conferences, publishes relevant works, and recognizes outstanding academic achievements by younger researchers.

The ÖGA aims to reach as many people as possible who are confronted with agricultural economic issues in theory and practice.

This means that the ÖGA’s target audience is all academics working on agricultural economics issues in the broadest sense. These primarily include the following academic disciplines: agricultural economics, agricultural marketing, agricultural structural research, agricultural law, agricultural and food policy, agricultural history, agricultural geography, agricultural systems analysis, food economics, agro-food studies, rural and agricultural sociology, rural regional and spatial research, agricultural business administration, and regional, resource, and environmental economics.

Organization & Structure

To efficiently manage its tasks, the ÖGA is organized into three levels.

The General Assembly is responsible for the fundamental decision-making of the association. This means that it elects the association's bodies, decides on the discharge of the Executive Board, sets membership fees, and approves any amendments to the statutes.

The eight- to 15-member Board of Directors, elected for a two-year term, is responsible for implementing the resolutions of the General Assembly and taking measures to achieve the association's purpose.

A five-member Executive Committee is appointed to implement the Board's resolutions and manage the association's day-to-day business. It consists of the President of the Association, his/her two deputies, the Treasurer, and the Managing Director.

Membership Fees & Services

In order to operate, the ÖGA requires financial resources, which are raised, among other things, through the contributions of its more than 120 members. The membership fee includes free subscription to the Austrian Journal of Agricultural Economics and Rural Studies.
