EAAE Webinar 2
The nitrogen planet boundary: how economists could help?
Date: September 9, 2020
Time: 14.00-16.00 (GMT+1)
Organiser: Raja Chakir
Mineral nitrogen application in agriculture has large benefits as it was essential to raise crops and animals to feed increasing world population over the past century. However, massive nitrogen use in crop fields is at the origin of a cascade of environmental impacts including soil acidification, inland and coastal waters eutrophication, and atmospheric N2O and NOx emissions affecting the global climate system and regional air quality. This issue is at the intersection between many disciplines: ecology, agronomy, climate sciences, soil sciences and economics.
The purpose of this session is to shed some light on how economists analyze the quantitative impacts of nitrogen use policies and scenarios on land use, food security, biodiversity and ecosystem services.

EAAE Webinar 3
Challenges and opportunities of machine learning in agricultural economics and policy evaluation
Date: October 14, 2020
Time: 16.00-17.30 (GMT+1)
Organiser: Nadja El Benni
Machine learning (ML) methods have demonstrated great potential in improving prediction and computational power in economic analysis (Storm et al., 2019). Agricultural economists should not miss the new developments and advantages coming along with these approaches but should co-develop applications that integrate the novel ML approaches with economic theory and prior knowledge.
The papers presented apply different ML approaches to data sets often used in agricultural economics research. The session likes to encourage discussions on the methodological advantages and disadvantages of ML and the potential contribution to agricultural policy monitoring and evaluation.
Moderation and discussion: Nadja El Benni and Mariska van der Voort
