We are now in a position to make significant developments to the Centre following a recent generous funding bequest. This will fund the establishment of the Sir William Roberts Centre for Land Use (Pobl y Tir), and we are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual to lead on this development in collaboration with academic staff in the school. The appointee will also work closely with the new PhD students to be recruited to the Centre. The objective of the post is to research the impacts of policy shocks (e.g. Brexit) on delivery of multiple ecosystem services from rural land and to drive policy development with relevant stakeholders. The position would suit someone with expertise in one or more of the following disciplines: agricultural or environmental economics, rural policy, sustainable agricultural production, land use modelling at the farm-, regional- and national-scales. This new Centre will integrate the range of natural and social science disciplines and expertise already present within the School of Environment, Natural Resources and Geography (SENRGy), so the successful candidate will need to have experience in synthesising information in different forms, including economic data. The Centre’s research will span agricultural and forestry policy and practice, towards the development of integrated approaches to land use. The role will also involve liaising with key external research partners, agriculture and forestry sector organisations, land owners and land use practitioners.
The University’s ambition is for the Sir William Roberts Centre for Land Use to become established on a sustainable basis beyond the current funding period as a leading national and international centre for research and provision of evidence to underpin policy. We foresee the holder of this post playing a key role in achieving this ambition through applications for external grant funding and partnership building. This represents an exciting opportunity for applicants who would like to embrace the challenge of driving the development of a new centre addressing some of the most important issues for the future of sustainable land use at both regional and international scales.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
• Work with SENRGy colleagues to integrate natural and social science knowledge within modelling frameworks to explore effects of changes in policy, markets and industry priorities on sustainable land use.
• Work with external partners to identify trajectories of land-use, based on policy and industry ‘pushes’ and ‘pulls’, and assess their wider impacts on the capacity to deliver multiple ecosystem service outputs at the landscape scale.
• Run workshops and discussion groups with appropriate land use sectors to understand opportunities and barriers to delivering multiple ecosystem services at different scales.
• Model and interpret the data generated.
• Co-supervise PhD students.
• Liaise with other scientists in the local and wider project team to maximise research opportunities and impact, delivering key messages to policy, industry and academia.
• Drafting and submitting high impact publications and proposals.
• Lead on the establishment of new partnerships.
• Play a leading role in the submission of research grant applications.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
• The post holder will be expected to participate in performance review and career developmental activities.

1. The post will suit an enthusiastic, highly motivated individual interested in understanding the effects of changes in policy and industry priorities on sustainable land use.
2. An in-depth knowledge of land use policy and macro-economics would be advantageous.
3. Applications are being sought from researchers with prior experience in integrating multiple sources of data (natural-sciences, social-sciences and economics), e.g. through modelling and scenario analysis of different policy- and industry-pathways.
• A PhD in an area of Rural Policy, Agricultural or Environmental Economics, Environmental Science, Sustainable Land Use, or a related subject.
• In-depth knowledge of UK agricultural and forest systems.
• Previous experience of integrating multiple data types, e.g. via modelling.
• Publication track record.
• Previous success in grant capture.
• Previous expertise in land use policy and macro-economics would be advantageous.
• Previous direct experience of working with stakeholders including farmers and policy makers / industry.

• Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to interface with diverse audiences and wide sectors of the public, as well as scientific and policy communities.

• Previous experience of line management (training will be provided)
• Experience in programming (there are large datasets to manage and mine)
• Full UK Driving licence for travel to remote field sites and meetings.
• The ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh.
