Symposium Montpellier: The future of the CAP

Ulrich Morawetz

The French Society for Rural Economy (SFER) with the support of European Foundations for Sustainable Agriculture and Food (EFSAF) is organizing a one-day symposium on “The future of the CAP” on 22 June in Montpellier, France.

The objective of the event is to have scientists, policy makers, civil society actors, foundations, NGOs and professionals discuss the general theme of "How can the future CAP foster innovative actions?"

The symposium will feature two roundtable discussions: (1) “Brakes and levers of the CAP to promote agro-ecological transitions”; and (2) “Is the CAP reflected in our plates?” and two plenary sessions (one main speakers and one or two commentators): (1) “Can we innovate in the CAP?” and (2) “The new British Agricultural Policy after the Brexit.”

Dacian Ciolos, former European Commissioner for Agriculture 2010-2014 and Romanian Prime Minister in 2016, will attend the event and has agreed to lead a round table.

Finally, the symposium is expected to end with the visit of the European Commissioner for Agriculture Phil Hogan (or a senior representative of the European Commission): this part of the conference will be open to the general public, and organized with the support of the European Commission representation in France.

This symposium is being organized at an important moment in the current negotiations on the CAP 2020 reform since the legislative proposals from the Commission will be officially presented in June 2018. This will therefore be an opportunity to take stock of the latest progress and to have views from other European partners.

Open to French and international audience from various stakeholder groups (e.g., civil society organizations, foundations, research and academic institutions, donors, etc.), the symposium will be conducted in English. The organizers are investigating the possibility to have the civil society debate with Phil Hogan with simultaneous interpretation in French/English.
