Farming Between Love and Money: Agricultural Impacts, Innovations, and Decisions in Central Illinois, US

Abstract: Central Illinois is in the heartland of US agriculture and a hot spot for negative water quality impacts from nutrients flowing into waterways from farms. Integrated socio-bio-geo-chemistry and engineering research and engagement highlighted complexities associated with mitigating water quality problems. While an array of technological innovations showed promise for reducing nutrient runoff, attitudinal factors complicated their adoption and implementation. Farmers’ complex human-nature relationship ideas revealed tensions in agricultural decision making. This presentation will highlight the heterogeneity among farmers and the need to appreciate social context when promoting conservation.
